School of Worship -Class Descriptions

Worship Band I-A & I-B (Starting point)

(Worship Band I-A and IB /Admission by audition/No letters of recommendations required)

Graded Course. Admission by audition. Worship Band I-A will allow students to utilize their talents on their respective instruments in an organized and collaborative way that brings glory to God. Students must be able to access www.planningcenteronline.com (on TAFA's account) to print charts and study music at home prior to rehearsals. 

Playing by ear is crucial and it is preferred that students are taking private lessons on their main instrument, although not required. Students will receive assignment sheets, will record together and be evaluated individually periodically, throughout the semester. Music will be contemporary worship songs and hymn arrangements from such artists as Hillsong United, All Sons & Daughters, Jesus Culture, Chris Tomlin and more. Both Praise & Worship Bands will combine for a Worship Night at the middle and end of each semester, where friends and family are invited to worship with us.

Each Worship Band I-A/I-B can accommodate 1 drummer, 1 bass player, 1 piano player, 1 keyboards/synth player, 2 acoustic guitar players, 2 electric guitars (lead and rhythm) and up to 5 vocalists. Orchestral instrumentalists (i.e. strings, percussion, woodwind, brass) may also inquire about an audition. If a student is a multi-instrumentalist, they may have the opportunity to play several instruments in the band.

Additional Supplies & Costs

Black folder & mechanical pencils. Students must have their own instrument and instrument supplies (cables, picks, strings, mics and amps, etc.) Please contact the teacher about specific instrument needs for your child at sarah.shannon@tafa.org or joey.geisel@tafa.org.

Pre-Requisites

Teacher Approval.

Students must audition for this class prior to registration. 

Students must also be enrolled in a TAFA fine arts class or ensemble (Art, Dance, Choir, Theater,Wind Ensemble, etc.) 

 

Songwriting

Admission by Teacher Approval. Students who have a passion to use their gifts to write “a new song to the Lord” will have opportunity to learn and develop the processes of songwriting as well as share their songs with others. Students will receive classroom instruction and apply what they learn in songwriting exercises and assignments. Students will have opportunity to record their in-class performances of their songs, and receive evaluations throughout the semester. The primary focus of this class is writing words and music that flow from a life of worship, in any musical style.

At the end of each semester, students will perform their songs in a casual setting. Select songwriters and/or their songs may also be used in praise and worship nights at TAFA.

Additional Supplies & Costs

3-Ring Binder, notebook paper, mechanical pencils, and a portable device capable of recording at least 10min of audio. Students must have their own instrument and instrument supplies (cables, picks, strings, etc.). There will be a keyboard available in the student building. Pre-Requisites

Teacher Approval. Students must have a recommendation or an evaluation by Dave Hill, Sarah Shannon, or Joey Geisel for admission to this class. Schedule evaluations by filling out the audition schedule above or contact Sarah Shannon at sarah.shannon@tafa.org to schedule an evaluation. 

The ability to play an instrument and an understanding of chord structures/keys and scales is crucial.

Students must also be enrolled in a TAFA fine arts class or ensemble (Art, Dance, Choir, Theater,Wind Ensemble, etc.)

It is also highly recommended that students be enrolled in one of the Worship Bands, although not a requirement. 

Advanced Worship Bands II-A, III, & Leadership 

Worship Leadership

Admission by Teacher Approval. This 30-minute training session is highly recommended for students (junior/seniors) desiring worship leadership training. Students will be assigned projects that incorporate what they have learned in the training sessions such as planning a worship order, charting songs, planning transitions within a service, and leading a team. These student leaders may be enrolled in ANY of the bands where they will apply what they learn in the band they play/sing in.

*Seniors (and some juniors) in this class are highly encouraged to enroll in the Leadership Training Class.

Worship Band II & III

Admission by audition/Letter of Recommendation. The Advanced Worship Band II-A & III will allow students to utilize their talents on their respective instruments in an organized and collaborative way that brings glory to God. This class will focus on student training in the processes of leading a team. Students will be accountable to study the Bible & maintain regular quiet times as they develop into worship leaders. 

Students must be able to access www.planningcenteronline.com (on TAFA's account) to print charts and study music at home prior to rehearsals. Playing by ear is crucial and it is preferred that students are taking private lessons on their main instrument. Students will receive assignment sheets, will record together for evaluation purposes and be evaluated in class for proficiency on their part throughout the semester. Music will be contemporary worship songs and hymn arrangements from such artists as Hillsong United, All Sons & Daughters, Jesus Culture, Chris Tomlin and more. This advanced band will lead a Worship Night Mid-semester, at the end of each semester, and 1-2 Monday TAFA Chapel services where friends, family and TAFA students are invited to worship with us. This band may be asked to lead worship for various church/youth events throughout the year.

Complete a year of dedicated participation in Worship Band I-A or be an advanced musician with prior experience. Students must also “apply” for this class by completing the Worship Band Application and submitting letters of recommendation prior to auditions. (Find both documents below.) Vocalists must be confident soloists & harmonize with ease.

Students must also be enrolled in a TAFA fine arts class or ensemble (Art, Dance, Choir, Theater, Wind Ensemble, etc.).

*Seniors (and some juniors) in this class are highly encouraged to enroll in the Leadership Training Class.

Students applying for the Advanced Worship Band II-A, III, or Leadership Training Course must complete the Student Application and submit 2 letters of recommendation before being permitted to register. Please turn these in to Mrs. Shannon or Joey Geisel.
